Erbslöh Aluminium will use Alcoa's low carbon EcoLumTM for its own brand NEWTRAL®. NEWTRAL® was designed with a specific focus on reducing CO2 emissions for automotive and industrial customers. Together, Alcoa and Erbslöh Aluminium will help downstream industries improve the sustainability of their products and supply chains with sustainably produced aluminum.
NEWTRAL® products will be alloyed at Erbslöh Aluminium's own foundry, which has casting lines that use regenerative burners and waste heat recovery. The company will additionally run its manufacturing process on 100% green electricity.
Frank Busenbecker, Managing Director of Erbslöh Aluminium GmbH: "To really take sustainability seriously, we have to actively shape the future with innovations in our own development processes and work with equally dynamic partners. That's why it gives us great pride to work even more closely with Alcoa to serve our end customers and shape the future together."
Alcoa's low-carbon EcoLum™ aluminum, which has a carbon footprint about three and a half times better than the global average, is a key enabler for aluminum processors like Erbslöh Aluminium to reduce their carbon footprint. As part of Alcoa's Sustana line of low-carbon products, EcoLumTM produces no more than 4.0 metric tons of CO2 emissions for each metric ton of metal produced, including direct and indirect emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2) throughout the production chain, including bauxite mining and alumina refining.
"Manufacturers and consumers continue to demand the use of more sustainable raw materials throughout the global supply chain, and our Sustana products are attracting growing interest from customers focused on sustainability," said Adam Smith, Alcoa's vice president of aluminum sales and trading. "Erbslöh Aluminum has a strong reputation as a manufacturer of high-quality products for a number of critical industries, and this agreement reflects our continued commitment to moving forward sustainably and working with customers on solutions."
The supply agreement between Alcoa and Erbslöh Aluminium is the latest in a series of contracts involving low-carbon EcoLumTM products and reflects the growing interest in and demand for more sustainable aluminum products. Earlier this year, Alcoa announced a partnership with RONAL Group to supply a combination of EcoLumTM and ELYSIS™ zero-carbon smelting technology for the production of the Audi e-tron GT wheels.
Alcoa and Erbslöh Aluminium are both members of the Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI), the industry's most comprehensive third-party certification system for sustainable manufacturing processes. Alcoa has received ASI's "Performance Standard" and "Chain of Custody" certifications, which allows the company to market and sell ASI-certified bauxite, alumina and aluminum.
